The Engineering Process

The engineering process is a set of steps that engineers, developers, and scientists use to create products or solutions. These products or solutions may be used in daily life to solve problems experienced by consumers or users.

The process begins with students defining a problem, researching the topic and identifying the requirements that need to be met. Then, they brainstorm ideas and consider what other people have done to solve a similar problem.

After they have made a list, they select the best solution to create a prototype. This step shows students that they have accomplished a lot and they can see their idea turn into a real solution.

After building their prototypes, students test them to see if the work as expected. They can also improve their designs using the prototypes.

They will likely go through many prototypes before they have a design that works and is complete. This iterative procedure teaches the designers to always improve their designs. They can’t be satisfied until they’ve done everything possible to create the best design.

Whether your students decide to become engineers or not, the process of engineering is something they can use throughout their lives to solve any problems. They can use the skills they have learned to complete any project, whether it is building skyscrapers or making sneakers.
